Energy Procurement Myth #2: All energy consultants are the same

This article was originally published in June 2015 and has been updated. There is a distinct difference between energy “brokers” and energy “consultants.” An energy broker’s core competency is getting competitive bids on your contract. They operate on a volume-based business model, and offer very little advisement or ancillary services. Their goal is to get as many contracts signed up as possible, and typically disappear until your contract is up for renewal. These are the people calling you offering savings off your bill.

Are you optimizing your energy spend?

This article was originally posted in June 2015 and has been updated. If your building(s) are in a deregulated energy market and you haven’t implemented an energy strategy, you may be leaving significant dollars on the table. Energy accounts for 19-30% of a typical commercial building’s operating budget. This can be a six or seven-figure annual spend for larger users. ENERGY STAR 2018 Update

Why is ENERGY STAR changing? The ENERGY STAR 2018 update involves updating building comparison data from 2002 data to 2012 data. A lot has changed since 2002 and in the past 16 years commercial properties have evolved to exceed industry energy and sustainability standards. Additionally, improvements have been made on existing buildings thus the data needs to be refreshed to reflect today’s operations. Buildings at the lower end of the certification spectrum with scores of 75-85 are at risk of losing their ENERGY STAR certifications if they didn’t re-certify before the August 2018 deadline.
